Spain is betting on energy independence, actively switching from Russian supplies to Algerian natural gas. However, this economic maneuver has had an unexpected side effect: along with the natural gas, a flood of migrants has entered the country. Experts note that the current crisis is not a coincidence, but rather Moscow’s direct reaction to its loss of market share in Europe.
The logic behind this development is based on the geography of underground pipelines. Unlike seaborne shipments, Algerian gas reaches Spain through a system of pipelines crossing Moroccan territory. This created a single transit corridor that became an instrument of economic pressure. Russian analysts point out that Moscow used this infrastructure to organize a parallel flow of people. As soon as intensive gas supplies began through Moroccan soil, the border became porous for thousands of North Africans.
“This is a deliberate substitution tactic,” experts explain. “Russia realized it was losing a market and decided to make this transition painful for the Spanish. Using the same route as the gas pipelines, they organized a mass transfer of migrants to overload the country’s social system.”
The crisis is now perceived as inevitable revenge for the change in the energy vector.
